Episode 012

If there is one thing that can derail our love of Earthdawn and prevent us from talking about it endlessly it is anything related to the Whedon-verse of Firefly.  Today is that day.  We whipped out our shiny new “Firefly: The Board Game”, included the “Pirates & Bounty Hunters” expansion and set out to play in the Black.  We review the game on production value, playability, ease-of-learning, and likelihood of re-playing the game in the future.  We tie in as much as we can with the Earthdawn RPG (like exploding die rolls) and talk about a few tangents to both games.  After this podcast your days of taking us seriously will certainly be coming to a middle.  The Earthdawn Timeline (part 3) will continue on our next Earthdawn-themed podcast.  Find the podcast, play the game, keep flyin’.

We had every intention of recording “Earthdawn 101 part 3” about all kinds of things… but we received a new Blog post from Earthdawn line developer Josh Harrison just before we sat down to turn the mics on, so we scrapped our plans and instead bring you our discussion of the blog post “Earthdawn 4 preview - More Artwork”.  We again describe (badly) the upcoming new interior art for the books we’re eagerly awaiting.  Then after we exhaust that topic a lot quicker than we thought we broach the topic of Earthdawn influences we find in video games.  Or how much video games have borrowed from Earthdawn.  And comic books too.  Yes, we mention comic books/graphic novels/sequential art books.  And we continue with our segment: The Earthdawn Timeline part 2.

We begin a multi-part podcast explaining with graphs, charts, and other visual aids (in an all-audio medium no-less) about how we explain the look and feel of Earthdawn using movies, characters, the occasional American T.V. show and even we include some Anime examples.  We talk about as many movies as we think apply to some element of Earthdawn from The Ice Pirates to Van Helsing.   Just go with us on this one.  Fewer than 100 movies, less than 100 minutes.  Not the movies, the podcast.

The OCHO!!!  Get it?  No?  Watch “DodgeBall” with Ben Stiller.

In this episode we discuss the art preview for the three books coming out and the merits of what we see and the points the referee took away because of what was omitted from the cover.  We then talk about the very same cover in color.  Does it really take up that much talk-time?  Yes.  Yes, it does.  We then move over to another artsy thing – the color plates for the new art: namely the Questor’s book.  So if you’ve ever had anyone describe art to you (badly) that’s what we do this episode.  We also bring up the new mechanic debuting in the GM’s book – POISONS.  Another lengthy episode, you’ve been warned.

After some technical difficulties (stupid MS backup at the same time we record – I should get that rescheduled) we discuss the blog post for the forthcoming Earthdawn 4th Edition launch titled “Questions & Answers” and finally talk about the funny phrase “high powered loot pinatas”.  But only after commenting on our very second piece of e-mail (thank you listener of one).  Then it’s on to the other blog entry, titled “What’s This, What’s This” and ruminate for a brief second on Spirits and throw a few ideas out to you listeners about what can be done with them.   Fourth Edition is coming soon, we can almost smell the ink drying on the pages.  Can’t you?

After some technical difficulties (really Microsoft, why don’t you like the recording software?) and some punch-drunk laughter before the show which led to a slow start, we finally discuss the blog post for the forthcoming Earthdawn 4th Edition launch titled “Update & Magic Items”.  But only after commenting on our very first piece of e-mail (thank you listener of one).  And we make a small correction to last week’s show.  Then we break into song (Really? No, not really) about the other blog entry titled “A Pair of New Spell Mechanics”.  We also speculate musically on Kid Rock’s Earthdawn habit and what armor Michael Jackson might have worn and other pop culture thingsie-whats-its.  Come D’artagnan we’re saving the king!

The band has gotten back together (after one of us was in an injurious car accident) and we open with a discussion about the blog post to the upcoming Earthdawn 4th Edition launch titled “Updating Creatures” and we discuss the impact they might have on your game.  Mostly your games, because there are no Beastmasters playing in our game.  Due to physical limitations (i.e. we were in an accident – sheesh, pay attention) we skipped the Blog update titled “Questions & Answers” and all the hilarity that would have ensued from the phrase ‘high-powered loot pinatas’.  Still sorry about the audio quality.  We continue to have no idea what we’re doing.
